Kaishan News | Making New Contributions to the Construction of a “Hydrogen Society”

Recently, our Group has won the bid for the hydrogen dry screw compressors for the Green Power–Green Hydrogen–Pure Hydrogen Metallurgy Engineering Technology Development and Construction Project (Phase I, Stage 1) of CISRI Hydrogen Metallurgy (Jilin) Co., Ltd. As the world’s first 1.2-million-tonne industrial production line for “green power–green hydrogen–pure hydrogen metallurgy”, this project marks another major breakthrough of our Group’s self-developed core green hydrogen equipment in the high-end metallurgy sector.

Hydrogen dry screw compressors serve as the core power equipment for green hydrogen metallurgy processes. They connect the hydrogen production end and hydrogen consumption end, and perform pressurization and delivery functions, ensuring that hydrogen enters the pure hydrogen shaft furnace reduction system at stable pressure and flow rates.

The equipment awarded in this bid is independently developed by Kaishan, featuring a proprietary Y-type rotor profile. Based on dry oil-free compression technology, it is deeply customized specifically for green hydrogen metallurgy applications. The compressor has a maximum suction capacity of 83,430 Nm³/h. No cooling medium is injected during compression, which fundamentally guarantees high hydrogen purity and meets the stringent gas quality requirements of metallurgical processes. Meanwhile, the equipment demonstrates excellent operating condition adaptability, accurately matching the fluctuating characteristics of green power–based hydrogen production, enabling rapid load adjustment and ensuring stable and reliable operation of the hydrogen delivery system.

This project is a national-level benchmark project invested and constructed by China Iron & Steel Research Institute Group (CISRI). Located in Songyuan, Jilin Province, it has a total investment of 11.8 billion yuan. It plans to build a 1.2-million-tonne annual pure hydrogen metallurgy production line and 960,000 tonnes of pure iron cast billets, forming a full industrial chain of green power hydrogen production → pure hydrogen metallurgy → green steel products.

Upon completion of Phase I, Stage 1, the project will achieve an annual processing capacity of 300,000 tonnes of sponge iron and an annual output of 250,000 tonnes of iron cast billets. It will be supported by a 780 MW new energy project, with an annual green hydrogen production capacity of **350 million cubic meters.

Adopting pure hydrogen metallurgy technology with full independent intellectual property rights from CISRI, the project replaces the traditional blast furnace carbon reduction process with a short green power hydrogen production — hydrogen reduction route, achieving near-zero carbon emissions at the source and driving a fundamental transformation of the steel industry from “carbon metallurgy” to “hydrogen metallurgy”.

The implementation of this project carries dual strategic significance: on the one hand, it provides a replicable and large-scale green hydrogen metallurgy solution for the global steel industry, supporting the achievement of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals; on the other hand, through the deep integration of “green power + green hydrogen + metallurgy”, it opens a new pathway for new energy consumption and resolves the challenge of accommodating fluctuating green power.

With its core dry screw compressor technology, Kaishan Group has not only linked the critical segments of hydrogen production and hydrogen utilization for the project, but also supported the large‑scale development of the global green hydrogen metallurgy industry with high‑end domestic equipment, contributing core equipment capabilities to industrial decarbonization in China and worldwide.
